The deadlift is a compound exercise that works both the legs and back at once. It is great for improving athletic performance and can actually improve your vertical jump. It is also great for building muscle and increasing strength in the glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, abdominal muscles, and lower back muscles. Just remember to focus on proper form. Engage your core and keep your back straight. Do not rush through any set of deadlifts as it is very easy to strain your back if you perform deadlifts with poor form. Keep your weight light at first and work up to heavier weights as you become more accustomed to the movement. If you are new to deadlifts, consider performing kettlebell deadlifts instead of barbell deadlifts as the form is easier to learn for this movement.
